The book begins with the artisans of Oman walking a pathway extending back into the far reaches of time. It ends with that same pathway made increasingly precipitous by the impact of global progress. Beyond Tradition, the final chapter of the book, takes a look at the future for Omani artisans and discusses options for the perpetuation of the country’s craft heritage in light of the rapid modernisation that has taken place during Oman’s renaissance. While recognising that craft industries have to be commercially viable in order to be perpetuated, the authors stress the importance of integrity to further development activity, and to maintaining the distinct national identity that Oman’s traditional crafts represent.
