In Chapter One, the authors explore
the origins of Oman's craft traditions and take the reader on a remarkable
journey from past to present, in which seminal geographic, social and
cross-cultural influences are identified. The authors also discuss in
detail the utilitarian basis upon which the development of all Omani craft
industries is predicated. A recurrent theme throughout this discussion
is the creative resilience of Omani artisans, for whom the transformation
of obstacle into opportunity gives purpose to a lifetime of endeavour.
As Omani artisans began to use texture, pattern, shape and colour to enhance
the beauty of utilitarian items, they invested those objects with an intrinsic
value over and above their functional worth, and they instilled in them
a distinct identity. Chapter one also contains an investigation of prevalent
design elements, their correlation to architecture, religion, trade and
social context, and the persistence of certain designs over time. In Oman,
where links to the past have long remained unbroken, it is not unusual
for such designs to have a provenance of hundreds or even thousands of
years.
